The Democratic Party of Japan's major setback in the Upper House election is largely attributable to its poor performance in rural areas, an analysis of voting patterns shows.
The DPJ fought battles in 28 single-seat districts in less- populated prefectures. It ran official candidates in 27 of them while supporting an independent in Kagawa.
